Calebasse and Calabash Gourd Percussion from Mali

Water Drum Hand Percussion and Shakeres

I began importing these unusual calabash instruments about five years ago, and can't keep them in stock! Click the links to see videos of the water drums being played. Calebasse come in two sizes and the very decorated version. They can be played alone on earth or carpet, or floating in the water or another calabash. The Gita is most often played by a dancer, but is a very versatile shakere.

Calebasse Gourd Hand Drum Mali

Calebasse Gourd Hand Drum Mali originates as a womens cooking pot. These large calabash gourds are hollowed to an even thickness, and played with the hands, fists, and sometimes a stick. They are both a subtle and complex instrument to explore. I use mine for a large bowl when not being played. I have shipped these all over the world, but be prepared, though light weight they are bulky and pricy to ship.

Decorated Calebasse Water Drum

Decorated Calebasse Water Drum includes the large base with cowrie shakers, the inner decorated floating drum and a padded beater. The large bottom gourd is supported in sand or with a cloth wrap and filled about 2/3 full with water. The smaller gourd is then floated on top and played with the hands, fists, and sometimes a stick. Floating is makes the classic watery doink sound when played. They are both a subtle and complex instrument to explore. This Large size is 16 x 18 x 9 inches and has a beautiful sound.

Mali Deluxe Decorated Snake Gita Calebasse Drum Shaker

The Gita is a drum held loosely in the hands and played with the fingers, or it can be rattled in two hands causing the shells to sound in rhythm. The Gita is traditionally played both as a percussion instrument and as a performance instrument by a dancer. This is a professional grade gita (GHEE-tuh) from Mali, with multiple sets of cowrie shells around the perimeter. 16 x 14 x 8 inches high with a beautiful burned in snake design. Pairs of white cowrie shells are attached around the open edge with nylon rope.

Shakere

Shakere Calabash Gourd Djabara with Seed Pods Shaker. Traditionally a womens instrument this is a large and loud shaker. It can be tapped, rotated, and shook. Bring order and beat to an unruly drum circle, this cuts through drums to establish a beat! 9 x 16 inches
